My favourite note is the D on the E string, it's really sweet sounding and tugs at my heart strings!

I like open D, I also quite like F on the E string...
No idea why though lol

Just about any note on the G string (especially on my Dad's fiddle where it sounds deep, glorious and amazing).
Claudia's G-string is lovely
But my most
desired note is A on the E string because it's where my first finger has to land when I 'shift' to third position and I'm starting to get it nearly in tune

The C on the G string, especially with a nice wide rich vibrato or the A harmonic on the A string... ooh!! *shivers*

Ooooohhh wish I could do the "nice wide rich vibrato" bit... my wobbles are like a unicyclist on a high wire (juggling balls of fire with a ferret down his pants...

I'm with the 'any note on the G' club. Yeah, I'm a violist, not a violinist, so I naturally go for the mellower sounds.
I did trial a violin or two at a forums concert and when I moved onto the E string it was a literal shock to the system! I jumped off the string both times I tried it!!!!!

C strings rule, OK!!!!

C strings are nice

(Think I'll always be a violinist at heart though, my attempts at the viola have been somewhat half-hearted so far!)

I like 3rd finger G on the D string or D on the A string, because when I hit them bang on the resonance gets the string an octave below going and that sounds lovely

A flat on the G string

on the D string the A which would be a 4th finger. GOT to be done in 3rd position though, 1st and 2nd don't cut it. Which is funny - my second favourite, E on the A HAS to be a 4th finger

Depends on the violin! At the moment my new baby is resonating beautifully between C and G on the G string (as in the G an 8ve above the open string) and the same range on the D string. Horray!

I love harmonics!
Interesting question, my favourite note is the open A, it's probably because I hear it so many times when I tune my violin! My second favourite note is the D on the E string when you shift into 3rd position and use the 4th finger, I don't like the notes higher than that D!

'Real' harmonics are lovely...

Artificial harmonics are evil IMO

Actually, good point - artificial ones are pants! The natural ones

are gorgeous

Having only played a harmonic for the first time last Thursday I must say I didn't know there was a difference
What's an artificial harmonic?
Miss Ross
Jul 8 2007, 06:47 PM
I probably won't explain it very well, but here goes!
You know with a 'real' harmonic you just touch your finger lightly on the string? Well, with an artificial harmonic you place a finger down on the string as you would normally and then use another finger lightly further up the string, so you would have for instance, your 1st finger pressed down on the A string (as if you were playing a B), and the 4th finger lightly touching where the E would be.

A and D natural harmonics. Notes which match open strings always sound really resonant (especially G on the D, someone mentioned this earlier).
Also notes played in higher positions, especially on the G or D strings. They have a nice mellow quality, more like the human voice.
