Squeak! While looking for something else, I discovered that several online sheet music suppliers, and Amazon.co.uk, have the books and CDs for the new syllabus available for pre-order, with a publication date of July 12. That's good news.

What about the actual syllabus, I wonder to myself?

will probably be 'promptly' published online at the same date? (only guessing) unsure.gif

Janexxx mentioned that the new syllabus itself will be out on 9th, but it was on a viola thread, so you mightn't have seen it. smile.gif

Thanks, both, that's good news. Wondering if any pieces will be retained, and what wll be new!

Viohazard and his brother had to shoulder most of the meals and housework for a while, leaving little time for pratice, so Viohazard's teacher decided to postpone Grade 8 till next spring under the new syllabus. I'm eternally grateful, as I don't think he initially realized how much more than the "3 pieces" was involved. Now to see what's on offer!

Anybody noticed that there are separate scales and arpeggios books for each grade? I wonder if the this means that I have to buy a new scales book for the grade my son's sitting instead of using the red Grades 6-8 book???

I wonder if the content has actually changed - son Viohazard's teacher grumbles about the fingering on the ABRSM scales, though I don't know why.

Please let me know if you get a chance to cast an eye over the new book smile.gif .

Can I use the new book to do my Grade 3 in November this year?

I'm having real trouble getting a hold of the current book - nobody seems to have any in stock sad.gif

I think you can only use it after January. Have you tried musicroom?

There are now placeholders on the syllabus page of the AB site, saying they'll be there on 12th July...

Best to check the syllabus (when it's out) and see if the scales have changed, but it might be that they have decisded to publish a separate scale book for each grade instead of the 1-5 and 6-8 books which could be a bit confusing to find the ones you need for each Grade.

You can use any fingerings you like, the ones on the books are only suggestions. I find it easiest to learn the finger pattern for each scale and then change position with my first finger on the tonic for each one.

*unless of course it is G, and you have to use the open G string as a starter*

AB promised it would be available on the website from the 12th July, which according to my calendar is TODAY.

I've looked a couple of times, but it's not available yet. Either someone hasn't activated it at the AB end, or they are working to a different calendar than the rest of us......

Anyone done the Grade 7 pieces before? My grade 6 is not over and I'm asking laugh.gif

LOL. They threw the Brahms sonatensatz in C minor from the violin grade 8 list to the viola's. laugh.gif

And everyone in my orchestra is excited about the new grade 8 violin syllabus. They love the lalo, and the bach partita no. 3. This syllabus seems promising.

I agree! The viola one is great too! smile.gif

New teacher coming tomorrow and I can't wait to get re-started. My G1 will probably be from the old syll, but I'm pleased with either.

Yes, the Lalo and Bach are great...and Czardas too!

Hmm, now to try getting to G8 by 2011... ph34r.gif

I don't know what to do now....I've been learning the current Grade 6 pieces but the new ones look interesting esp. the Bach. I am wondering whether to throw away the work I have done already and start again, or trust that I can be ready in time with the pieces I'm doing....I think the scales are the same though.

I'd say go for it, if you are indeed at grade 6 level now then you should learn the new pieces in time no problem smile.gif (I take it you are going for grade 6 in March next year? as the new syllabus will not be accepted in exams until then.

I like the way it's been made fairer for violists. In terms of buying music, I mean. Violinists get the relevant grade book by the AB and can then select any of 3 pieces from each list as well as having others to chose from. The violist always had to buy more than one and no grade seemed to have a piece from one book on each list. It does now! G1-G5 have at least one of the 'Time Pieces for Viola' on each list. Nothing like as much choice, but then 'Time Pieces 1' goes from G1-3 and Vol 2 covers 4 & 5, so it's nice to see that we're no longer expected to spend a small fortune on music!!

Some of the books I've got or was interested in have been dropped, but they're still gonna be useful, so onwards and upwards!

One of my absolute faves is now on the G8 and, as this syllabus is to last indefinitely, I may get to play Bruch's Romance for my own G8 exam one day. tongue.gif
