Has anyone had any experiences with online / postal theory lessons? I would like to have a good understanding (up to Grade 5 ish) rather that just pass exams.

Hope someone out there can help.

I tried to do this with someone advertising in Music Teacher magazine, but the service seemed most unprofessional and so I didn't pursue it.

I do know yamaha who posts/posted on these has very successfully studied beyond grade 5 by post.

I do have the contact details myself if I can find 'em...

Not sure if I should put forward this suggestion but ....

... what about reading some of the replies to questions in the Theory forum, see whose replies you find the most easy to understand, then PM those teachers who are on your wavelength to see if they might do postal or online teaching.... unsure.gif

I've done theory marking by post for someone who's been preparing for Grade V - past papers and a cheque sent to me, then past papers returned to them marked and with appropriate comments a few days later. It must have worked as the candidate scored 91 in their exam smile.gif

PM me if this is the sort of thing you need.

For my diploma I could not find anyone in my area who was willing to teach theory at this level. At a seminar regarding diplomas, I spoke with the chief examiner and during the conversation, he asked how my theory prep was going. I told him my dilemna and he took me on there and then. It worked quite well - I passed the theory. My only objection that there were no deadlines as such - ie having to have the work done by the next lesson as such. Whenever I had work done I sent it, he corrected it and then wrote me notes for the next section. And so it continued!!!!

Unless you particularly want personal contact with a teacher, there are loads of theory CD-Roms on the market - you can google to find them, and/or get them from good music shops.
