I'm writing a movement from a clarinet concerto, and I'm just wondering if there are any conventions as to whereabouts in the score I should put the various parts... Do I put the solo line on the top, then woodwind, brass and strings following down the page? Or is there a more usual order? unsure.gif

On sibelius for the orchestra (modern) the order is..

Piccolo - 1 + 2

Flute - 1 + 2 + 3

Alto Flute

Oboe - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4

Cor Anglais - 1 + 2

Clarinet in Eb

Clarinet in D

Clarinet in Bb - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4

Clarinet in A - 1 + 2 + 3

Bassoon - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4

Contrabassoon - 1 + 2

Horn - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8

Trumpet in D

Trumpet in C - 1 + 2 + 3 + 4

Bass Trumpet

Trombone - 1 + 2 + 3

Euphonium - 1 + 2

Tuba - 1 + 2

Piccolo Timp

Timpani - 1 + 2

Timpani - 3 + 4

Bass Drum

Tam-tam

Triangle

Tambourine

That doesn't suggest where the solo instrument goes.

I THINK it's above the strings.

Yes, I think that the solo instrument goes between the percussion and the strings.

Have a look at that wiki music site - open a few concertos and see how it's done. I also think it's above strings.

Thanks guys, above the strings it is! Sarah - thats a LOT of instruments!! Somehow I think I won't have that many... But thanks for the order smile.gif
