blink.gif im not sure what to do but

i have a friend online, who keeps saying that she can play these really hard fantastic pieces, such as Vivaldi's *winter* concerto in Fminor, after only 1 month of violin.
I know she learns other intruments but according to my classmate, you dont learn certain positions of the violin in certain higher grades.

Problem is, these postions are used in the concerto so she couldnt have possibly learnt it.

Now im confused..is she lying to me? just to show off?
I only know her online, and i havent actually heard her play..

ph34r.gif help!
P.s- i dont want to tell her off nastily but she is younger than me.

I would say she is showing off, so just smile sweetly (if that's possible online) and just let her claims slip quietly past you.

If you've never heard her play then you can't be sure, but I'm a violinist (of music college training) and I've certainly never known anyone capable of playing a Vivaldi Concerto after just one month of violin lessons - not even a child prodigy!

There are indeed extremely simplified versions of these pieces aimed at beginners. In fact a very simple version of 'Autumn' from 'The Four Seasons' was on the G1 violin lists for 2003/2004.

If you feel you want to say something in return, be subtle. Ask her who the arrangement is by, or what book she's playing it from...........

I smell something, and it certainly isn't flowers! Unless she plays the viola or something to a high standard and has siply just transfered her technique over and learnt the treble clef as it is possible to learn to read a new clef in a month, unless she has done that I highly doubt that she can play Vivaldi's winter concerto in F minor.

She only plays piano and violin.

But the copy of Vivaldi's winter was actually from me and it had 4 flats..not a simpler version. Key signature is the same.

blink.gif wow! i didn't know that she was that desperate..

*feels so betrayed*

Ahhh, don't feel betrayed. It could be that she is just trying to impress you (given that you are older and she admires you probably).

I have a similar friend too.

She has already got G8 piano and she started learning the violin about 1 year ago.

Some days ago she told me that she can already play the G5 violin pieces and she's doing the G5 violin exam this year. She said that she can play them fairly well too!

I just wonder if she's telling the truth.

Only 1 year to G5 ?

Let me share my experiece. biggrin.gif
I passed my piano ATCL with distinction before. I played the violin a few times at my friend's home before. (He only taught me how to take the bow and hold the violin.)
At that time, I already can play some easy piece.
A few days ago, another friend gave me a free violin! laugh.gif I play it about one to two hours these days. I can now play Elgar's Salut d'Amour already! laugh.gif Although some of my fingerings and the bow may not be correct, the notes are quite accurate.
I still need help on my changing of position and the up bow or down bow!

Hi all

You never know there may be some truth in what the girl's saying...

I picked up the violin a couple of months ago, and i just kept practicing for hours and have worked my way through the grades 2 3 and some of 4 book. I can't play them all perfectly but most of them are ok. I play four other instruments... but never a viola or violin before. Some people may be able to get some good progress in a month.. i guess it's possible... just not sure she's telling the total truth! But you never know.

As a violin teacher I can tell you that it would be impossible for someone only playing one month to be able to play the original version of Vivaldi Winter dry.gif Sure Spring Mvt 1 is just on for Gr8 2005 and that's way easier than Winter. It takes years to be able to control the bow and to move at fast speeds not to mention the string crossings and position changes.

unsure.gif Have you heard her play it yet!

you could always invite her round to play duets.... that tends to sort the sheep from the goats!!!!
