I'm doing grade 6 on the 16th...arrhhhh!!! only a week and a day to go!! I might pass. I hope so! I've just got to make sure i check really hard (esp. for consecutives

) and don't miss anything obvious and try my best. If i do that, i won't have let anyone down!
Good luck to everyone taking an exam soon, especially on the 16th!

I'm taking G5 on the 16th, for fun (I must have been in a masochistic mood on entry day

). The last time I took a written music exam was in 2001 (A level), so it will be a bit strange, plus I'll probably be considerably older than most of the other candidates!

I've been trying to do as much work as possible. Good luck to you all on the 16th. Because not many people do theory after grade 5, in the school where I am doing my g6 exam I could be the only person left there for an hour with the invigilator. What a scary thought. Has that ever happened to anyone?

Excuse me if I say that I FEEL GOOD also, although I am a teacher and not taking my Theory Exam on Saturday. I only have one candidate (Grade 5) this time, and in her last test paper she got 100% - so I feel quite good.

Me too, Malone; getting nervous that is. I am sorry I can't help you. On the grade 6 paper, question 2, does the leading note always have to go to the tonic. Please can someone remind me about what the falling 7th is and the rule. Thanks
piello
Jun 15 2007, 06:17 PM
My teacher says that at the cadence at the end, always have the leading note to the tonic. Falling 7th and rule??

uhoh, is there something important i've missed?? I'm getting nervous, too. In theory (excuse the pun) i should also be revising, but i'm not sure how much cramming i can really do.
Good luck to everyone!

Thanks, Piello. Are you doing grade 6 as well? I did a few 1a questions just now. I am now working on doing a few no. 2 questions and then I will look at the melodies my teacher has marked. Oh and I had better remind myself about how to write out ornaments in full.

Yes... leading note to tonic and make sure it's in the same part/voice.
Never heard of a falling 7th rule and I got grade 8 distinction.

Thanks Sbhoa. I'll forget about what falling seventh refers to. Must have got myself confused with something else.

Now that makes sense.... I tend to think of it as 'resolves downwards'.

Well 3 of my children are sitting their exams now. 2 x gr 5 and 1 x gr 6.
Unfortunately the gr 6 past papers that were getting marked by someone other than me, got lost in the post on their way back to us - so he never did find out what someone official thought of his work !
And yes, they all read the DJONES theory check list that was blutacked to the front door as they left.....
Now comes the big wait till Sept when the exam marks make their way over to Europe.

I found the grade 6 paper a lot more difficult than the past papers that I've been doing!! Eeeek!
There were three "melodic intervals" in the pieces which I just couldn't find. I spent about half and hour looking for them before giving up completely and just guessing. Realising figured bass was also trickier than usual, a couple of chords just wouldn't fit and I ended up given some of the parts lines that I didn't like!
Still... I hope I've scraped a pass!

I didn't think it was too, bad actually; but it did take me a while to find those intervals! Also, on Q5, I couldn't figure what chord is D# F# A# B# in the key of C# minor. Any ideas?
But i'm just hoping for a pass....we'll wait and see

Just back from doing grade 8 paper....
Wasn't all bad. I was quite confident with my trio sonata, piano writing and melody writing questions, which are the three I usually find I spend the most time on, but then it came to the two analysis questions and they were harder than the past papers I reckon. There were lots of sneaky questions and it took me forever to find the consequtive notes of anticipation a third apart, and then again a while to find the false cross relation which i nearly gave up on until after staring blankly at the page at the end it jumped out at me.
The last question was quite easy, more boring than anything else - transposing 4 Horns in F and a Clarinet in A all into the bass clef and back to concert pitch...
And what about the changing bars into different time signature without losing the rythmic feel - That never came up in the past papers I have!!

Oh so those intervals were there?! Gutted - I really couldn't find them. Was hoping that it was some kind of mistake!
Errm I had that chord as a G# major 7 chord as I found a G#, B#, D# and F#...

I was also beginning to hope/think there was a mistake till i found them on one of my numerous check throughs! Oh, that could be right! I checked that chord so many times that there must've been something I missed! i wrote "On D# (supertonic), a 6th chord, minor, root position" !!

just a load of words; out of that lot i thought a tiny bit might be worth 1 mark!!

Did you transpose the transposing instruments? I remember having a weird chord until I realised that there were horns in the chord and that I needed to take their part down a perfect fifth!
