its so rock n roll
Hey there! It's been for ever since I posted on here!

Well I'm currently studying music, and one of our compulsary lessons is Grade six theory (or higher if you already have grade six) and well I'm now 17 and I did my grade five when I was about 14 and I can't believe how much more difficult grade six is than five!

Did anyone else find this or is it just me?

There is a considerable difference between the two syllabi - but you will learn loads from doing the Grade 6 - all the best with it - let us know how you are getting on!

Also, the chances are that you've forgotten some of the grade 5 syllabus over the years. Still, good luck!

Lol. This is almost exactly the same as my experience. I bought the Grade 6 book today! I knew there was a big gap between the two and I want to study Music at uni so now the exams are finished I took the plunge and started reading about figured bass.... Got my Grade 5 Distinction but what seems like many, many years ago biggrin.gif although it must have been about 5. Let's see how we get on!

Not necessarily especially if it was well known at the time of the exam and you've carried on with playing.
There was about 10 years between my grade 5 and starting grade 6 and I was still scoring high 90s on past papers my teacher had me go through to check I was sound up to grade 5.

To rock n roll..... yes, there is a big difference.

There is a big difference but the steps seem to get smaller after Grade 6.

I've not done Grade 6 theory - but I've finally given in to pressure to teach it. I do a little composing and arranging for local groups and once it got out that I know this stuff I had other teachers demanding to be taught it. I might have to take the exam in November to feel less of a fraud but it shouldn't be a problem. I'm surprised there's a shortage of teachers for this - and even more surprised there are instrumental teachers who don't know where to begin with it. So I guess it's true - it's very much more difficult than grade 5 - until you've learned how to do it, that's all. Not sure I'm up to grade 7 or 8 though.

I know the feeling,
I have mine tomorrow morning, smile.gif

Feeling confident, main advice is just take your time, you have 3 hours to do it

Good luck to anyone else doing it
