Is anyone else playing this gorgeous piece? I'm trying (unsuccessfully so far) to develop the clear-light-presto-stacatto-pianissimo touch it needs . I'm also looking for a good recording of it. I hunted down a few extracts on the web and the trend seems to be to play it competitively fast - far faster than the 144=crotchet recommended by my AB book - more like 180+. It sounds too percussive to me at such speeds, more typewriter than music! Is this really how it is supposed to be played? I wonder, as the direction is presto, but not prestissimo.

I'd be grateful if anyone could recommend a cd/recording of this they particularly like, and advice or er, sympathy , on playing it is welcome too!

Ive been into Mendelssohn a lot lately (I started a thread on A minor Capriccio), and have also tried the F#minor one (a bit beyond me) . Will have a look at the Scherzo when I'm back home tomorrow, I must have a copy somewhere. I recall an E Major one but not E Minor, though I may be mistaken.

Funny that. . .

This one's definitely in E minor - it has a page-longish arpeggio section to hammer the point home. Although, it does finish in E major. I haven't tried any other Mendelssohn scherzos - I think they're all (at least!) a bit beyone me at the moment - including this one! I haven't got much Mendelssohn experience, apart from the Songs Without Words. How is the A minor Capriccio going? I'll hunt out the thread...
