Urm, i kinda generally either guess or some of them i just know. Like, i know where 2 8ves above mid.C is written and generally work in 8ves - i can just tell when notes are an 8ve apart. Other than that, i don't know a way!
If you've guessed it and it sounds and looks about right, then i take it that it is. tongue.gif DON't do this, though - not good! ph34r.gif

That's exactly how I learnt to do them!!!

If you're good at working in 8ves then start looking at 5ths and 3rds too, think of the ledger lines as a ladder, it does get easier.

bass clef 5 lines are Greedy Big Dogs Fall Asleep

Then above and below the stave would make it:

Ask
Can
Every

Greedy
Big
Dog
Fall
Asleep

Counting
Elephants

I think that would be a bit more helpful the other way up.
Took me a few seconds to realise why it looked odd.
I think that once you understand that music is written on a ladder where the notes go up by step for line to space you can work out lots of ledger lines.
And if there is something very low or high then do what the rest of use do and write the letter over the note.

Silly me - I meant below and then above.

Thanks for pointing that out to me and sorry if I confused anyone else.

I meant like this:

Or leger!! wink.gif

Spelling issues aside... wink.gif

I would try reading by interval - if the notes are directly next to each other it's a second (obviously), if the two notes are both on a line or both in a space then it's a third, etc.

It also helps to find a reference point - a few notes that you recognise instantly. My students are pretty good with F and A and C below the stave, and C, E and G above it.

And of course, sight read as much music as you can and you will soon feel more comfortable with it! smile.gif

I've pinched this from another thread but I've found it quite useful for testing myself - 5 minutes a day should do the trick!

Unfortunately this exercise does not help ledger lines

I can quickly read up to about 2, but no more than that.

And that test thingy isn't good, cause I read notes the typical Japanese way, so my first reaction is the Japanese note names, then some time later, I convert them into the english note neames.

Yes, it does - click on settings and choose how many leger lines you want to be tested on and in which clef.

Did you ever do the thing in Japan where you colour the stems of the notes in different colours according to the note? If you do that for the leger lines it might help after a while smile.gif

Nope

Well you decide which notes are which colour, and then colour the stems in. Then you'll be able to see really quickly what the note is, and after a while you'll be able to rexognise the note without the colours smile.gif
