I'm running a small theory group at the mo - and as usual there's always one smarty pants!

We were looking at the interval f double sharp to c sharp. - Diminshed 5th - no problem!

But then smarty says - what would f double sharp to c (natural) be?

After some careful thought i said i ain't got a clue.

Now perhaps the writing or playing of this interval will cause a tear in the fabric of time and space and create an unstoppable paradox in the continuance of the universe and the planet Earth to explode.

But maybe, just maybe, someone knows the answer!

Many thanks

I think it's double diminished.

And there's nothing wrong with a teacher who doesn't have all the answers at their fingertips.
Knowing that everyone has to go away and find out the answers from time to time is a useful lesson for students to learn.

Double diminished sounds right to me unsure.gif

I think so too (It's got to be a fifth of some kind, F - C).

and yes agree - we can't know all the answers all of the time.

Reminds me of an old cartoon (was it in How to be Topp? that dates me I fear!) where the school master is saying "heavens boy, don't you know that" - and turning the pages of the text book under the master's desk at the same time. biggrin.gif

Well that clears that up. Thanks folks - shame though - I was kind of looking forward to some inter dimensional chaos!

Many thanks peeps

There's always that risk, but on the other hand you get all the benefits of a really big particle accelerator without the expense of actually building one smile.gif

But the risk to both the metikula and prasa bodies of the universe is a little too risky, even though the metikulans have atrocious manners.

Fair point, well made.

It took me no more than a few seconds to work out that it was a double diminished, using the semitones method. And I could be certain of the answer.

I personally would rather use this method than spend however long trying to fathom out the answer using the scales method, and still not be sure of the answer.
