Hi everyone, smile.gif

Some of you have met my son Nils, and others have heard me talk of him. I've warned him I'm going to sell him on Ebay if he doesn't tidy his bedroom. Only kidding. I'll sell everything in the bedroom instead!

For those who are interested, here are two recordings of Nils playing drums. Both recordings are from the School Of Rock, Sevenoaks. The first song is from April of this year, with George, Ollie and Mash in their band called Not So Disturbed: http://www.schoolofrock.org.uk/02_George_band.mp3

The this one is from last summer's Summer School. Frankie, Ollie, Jack and Nils in their band Haze. http://www.schoolofrock.org.uk/3_summer06.mp3

At the School, they are put into bands on the first day. Days two and three are spent composing and practising. Day four is in the recording studio, and on Day five is the concert to family and friends.
They're a lovely bunch of young people, and a lot of fun is had all round.

Thanks - will pass your comments on to him. Him and the rest of his band are just up at the skate park 9I just got back from dropping them there), so I have a few hours peace till they come back for band practice.

The Summer 06 one is a nice song - what's it called??

Also - do you know how it was recorded? What equipment was used? Did they play to a click-track? Was it multi-track or did they all play together?

The drum sound is good - bass drum is punchy and comes through the mix well, snare is not too harsh but has a good short decay, hats are crisp and can be heard well, ride is pingy but not too pingy... Is that the natural sound or has it been EQ-ed or compressed at all?

Wow, they're both great happy.gif

hey "manek" this is nils,

we called the summer 06 one "who knew" simlply for the vocals in the chorus

i can't remember much of who knew, but the april 07 one i can, so i'll answer in terms of that one

i'm not sure about the equipment, but duue to the short space of time we had to record, the drums and guitars were recorded at the same time, whilst the lyrics were recorded separately along with the bass.

and we just played naturally, without a metronome (that is what you mean by a click track, right?)

nope, all the drum sounds are natural, well i think so anyway, the recordings sound similar to how i remember the kit sounding, so i think they left out triggers and effects

the kit wasn't mine though =[
can't remember what brand it was, but in the summer 06 piece I used a Gretsch blackhawk kit, with zildjian a custom crash cymbals, zildjian k-custom hats and a paiste something or other ride (i think)

looking foward very much to playing there again in august

sorry i can't remember much of the equipment and sorry again for not knowing of the equipment used, but thatnk you for the reply =]

what're you up to with your drumming? drummer.gif

Thanks for your reply Nils!

I'm playing with a function band atm, and doing studio sessions at college... I've also started teaching...

Won't be much drumming over the summer, due to going away and sailing events etc, but in September I'll be back to teaching, performing with Rough Diamond and recording for other students at college... I'm also going to be producing an album for a friend's band, and hope to record my own album too...!
Amber
Hi Manek sweetie,

Just noticed your reply. I'll show Nils when he gets in. Sounds like you're going to have a great summer, and September sounds as though it's going to be fantastic. Are you going sailing with your dad?

It's alright =]

Do u need a diploma to teach or simply to have passed grade 8? I've been considering it (not that i'm quite grade 8 standard) for a little while now.

Rough Diamond sound good, are you only a cover band or do you have songs of your own?

School Of Rock starts July 30th, should perhaps have recordings up before the school holidays end, really excited.

Wow, he's astonishing isn't he. And so cute! Not a bad kit for a 5 year old either! smile.gif

Just posting a new link from Nils Summer School this year, for anyone who's interested. This track takes me back to my mis-spent youth with echoes of Black Sabbath etc. I think the boy who's doing vocal has a really unusual voice for a 16 year old.

What do people think? smile.gif
