Good Intentions

What is the piece of music that you would love to play - or maybe the piece which inspired you to play in the first place?

The piece I would love to play one day is The Prelude: Suite One - J.S Bach 6 Suites for Cello biggrin.gif

lottie
biggrin.gif Does it just have to be one piece???

Oh I suppose then I've always loved the Beethoven Violin concerto.

But all of the Bach violin repetoire is my ultimate dream.... I borrowed a book of transcriptions of Bach for violin duet yesterday and I'm in heaven....... wub.gif

Theme from Schindler's List is what finally pushed me into violin playing (although I loved violin before that), my ultimate dream is to play it one day (thankfully it is not the hardest piece out there), but since discovering violin playing I started falling in love with almost everything played with a violin and I am also getting to love Fiddle music now, also dreaming of playing some Paganini's pieces one day wub.gif
earplugs
Since about the age of 10 it has always been Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto - as if....

Of course not playing for about 25 years in the middle hasn't helped.
cellocase
Dvorak cello concerto.....and finally I'm getting within sight. I'm good enough to be able to play most of the notes, but unfortunately it's still woefully lacking compared to what I want it to be....
welltemperedklavier
assuming you mean on string instruments...
Tchaicovsky violin concerto smile.gif violin.gif

only thing is.. I dont actually play violin.. (yet!)
Goldfinch
Bach Violin Partita No 2 . Without a doubt. It's just off this planet.
LadyOrchestra
Oooooooh Mephisto Waltz on piano... many of Brahms piano intermezzos... lots of piano pieces.
elisabeth_rb
I think it would be a close tie between Hummels Fantasia for Viola and Orchestra (where a viola makes friends with a clarinet and gets over-excited about it!!) and Brahms' Sonata for viola and piano in F minor, esp the last 2 movements.

It'll take a few years, but I'll get there....... wink.gif
DuoMusician
Flight of the Bumblebee and Wieniawski Scherzo Tarantelle. laugh.gif Recently one of my teacher's students played the Tarantelle RIGHT before my turn at the recital. I didn't know whether to be extremely embarrassed to play, or extremely impressed. closedeyes.gif
petrat
I gave up playing the cello as I could never play my dream pieces quite well enough.
fsharpminor
On piano, one of the last five Beethoven sonatas, or Ravels 'Gaspard de la Nuit'

On organ, Reubke's 'Sonata on the 94th Psalm'

Recuerdos de la Alahambra by Tarrega.
sarah-flute
Possibly the Tchaikovsky violin concerto...

Never will though rolleyes.gif

On cello - getting through The Elephant would be a good start.... dry.gif rolleyes.gif laugh.gif
Devil_Fiddler
Devil's Dream, if I can ever work out exactly how it's physically possible wacko.gif

I'd really love to play the Theme from Schindler's List actually well in concert, hashed my way through it in our last school concert, but I really didn't do it justice.

EDIT: I meant Up Jumped the Devil not Devil's Dream, that's the dance. Which is nearly as confusing as the tune, atleast without walking it, but I can do it now!!
Jaunty Angle
Fantasy Impromptu, I'm a couple of bars into it. My piano teacher says I should learn it. sad.gif

What do I do next? sad.gif

Edit: This is in strings. I didn't notice that. haha.

I couldn't agreed more.

For me it's the Chaconne from the Partita No.2 - on the guitar. I've bought the music and I've learned one varation (the easiest one). It's a start.

Me too. I can't even manage the first chord...yet...although I can do a few bars from further on if I am really selective. It's a start. Awesome pieces of music.

Actually last night I dreamt I owned a Strad...was sooooo disappointed when I woke up.

Vivaldi 'the 4 seasons' ALL the movements
Alto
I too would like to play Vivaldi's Four Seasons, ALL of them.
Andromeda_Aiken
Kreisler's Praeludium & Allegro. I just got the score a few days ago. I can play only the 1st page right now. *grin* Started the violin in Feb last year.

Another dream piece is Paganini's La Campagnella. I'll probably have to wait like 7 years more for that. biggrin.gif

Edit: *grin* I really wanna be able to play the Theme from Schindler's List too! I'm going to hunt for the score soon. I heard it the other time and sent a text message off to my friend asking if it was in F major and I was right! Wheee! I was soo happy! biggrin.gif
flute fanatic
Haven't heard my dream piece yet.
Morgan's Munchkin
Flight of the Bumble Bee blink.gif

I've just brought the flute music for it, but would love to play it on violin!!
Shaolin_monkey
For me it would be Handel's 'The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba' on the harp. My tutor plays it on the CD she released last year, and Catrin Finch played it a recent gig in Cardiff. Both blew me away; I dream of being able to play it myself!

Either that or 'Cosmia' by Joanna Newsom. I have tickets to see her in the Albert Hall in September, and I can barely wait!
Sergeant_Chronos
Although I can't play violin now or plan to in the next few year, maybe I'll learn in college, but I want to learn how to play Scars of Time in the Chrono Cross OST. >.>

As with lizbun, Alto and pialinist, Vivaldi's Four Seasons complete. Another was Meditation from Thais, and I performed it two weeks ago. smile.gif

Attributed to Bach. There is no original manuscript in Bach's hand, so it may well have been written by a student of his, or one of Bach's close contempories. It is thought however, that the composition was orignally written for violin and then arranged for organ at a later date - the arpeggios converted into chordal progressions. It is published for violin as a solo work, similar to the solo sonatas and partitias for violin, but is 'attrib. J S Bach'

Hehe... do you mean Leila Josefowicz?? Omg I'm going to two of her concerts in July on two consecutive days: Mendelssohn concerto the first day, then Shostakovich concerto!!! blink.gif

Wow ... favourite piece... this is a hard question to answer tongue.gif the list gets added to every day! Paganini caprice no. 17 (well all of them really biggrin.gif ), shostakovich concerto, brahms concerto, tchaikovsky concerto, beethoven concerto, prokofiev violin sonatas, bach chaconne...

I heard Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' on the t.v. and it sounded fantastic! (i've heard it before, but watching it just blew me away). biggrin.gif

I'd love to play it on violin.

'Summertime' on the cello!!
The introduction to 'Stars' from Les Miserables was what first got my dream of learning a strings instrument reignited... biggrin.gif Still sends goosebumps down my neck!

For me it would have to be Paganini's Moto perpetuo. I've just got the Deutsche Grammaphon recording of this, played by Gil Shaham with guitar accompaniment by Goran Sollscher. It's truly breathtaking!
nova
I'd really like to be able to play the Biber violin sonatas, and for piano (wrong forum I know) I'd love to be good enough for Debussy's preludes. Neither are very likely in the near future I think!
N

Devil_Fiddler
More to add... I'd love to get Bridge's Moto Perpetuo really good - I'm playing it for my HCYO audition on Firday, but I'd love to get it even better. Also Barber's violin concerto - the fast movement. I listened to it last night I was like ohmy.gif
lizbun
I'm completely in love with Vivaldi's 'four seasons' 2nd mvt from winter wub.gif Well, actual the whole lot but...

I'M GOING TO PLAY THEM ONE DAY!!!!!!! ( and the mendelssohn violin concerto...)
Andromeda_Aiken
Adding on...I've fallen in love with Sarasate's pieces so I would love to be able to play Zigeunerweisen, Zapateado and Carmen Fantasy. *grin*

Would also love to play the Mendelssohn and Bruch violin concertos. smile.gif Will add more when I think of more.

Well, that's another one ticked off! smile.gif Flight of the Bumblebee? tongue.gif *dreams*

(Totally off-topic, but does anyone know if Good Intentions is ok? She disappeared after she went on holiday to Turkey last year...)
Rosie91
Since this has resurfaced, I'll answer it.

Meditation from Thais is the thing I've already 'played' to a certain level which I'd like to play really well...because playing the notes and playing it well are worlds away.
My favourites in general are slow, expressive pieces like Schindler's List, Rachmaninov Vocalise, Chopin Noturne in C# minor.

On a short timecale I'd like to play Praeludium and Allegro well, because that's the main thing I'm bashing away at at the moment, and whilst I'm not sure Kreisler's quite my cup of tea overall it would just be such fun to be able to play a piece like that without it seeming so hard! not really possible I know!

On a very long/when pigs fly timescale, my favourite concerto I think is Beethoven, but what I most want to be able to play is solo Bach...can't decide between E major and D minor....possibly D minor just has it. wub.gif

That was a rather long reply and much more than one piece! blush.gif whoops.

Better get practising. violin.gif

Do you know what grade they are? Want to know if I could try it in the near future.
Rosie91
I learnt the slow movement from Winter when I was about grade 4-5 and adored it. smile.gif Haven't played any of the rest, but on this list, the 1st and 3rd movements of Spring are down as grade 8.
maya3
bruch violin concerto - getting there.
Mad Tom
Despite being a Scriabin fanatic, with soft spots for Haydn and Beethoven, the piece I some day want to play properly is ... Prokofiev Sonata No. 8

Oooh, that's a point....

I want to get my head round Praeludium and Allegro, should take a bit of practising, but I might manage it...
Morgan's Munchkin
I'm currently learning Barber's Adagio for Strings which I LOVE - It's my dream to play it up to performance standard. Could take a while though!!
