...no I can't justify or afford buying it at the moment, don't worry, I haven't quite lost it yet.

I'm just curious that it doesn't seem to get mentioned, whereas I've seen the piano ones highly praised.

I wondered if anyone has it and what you thought of it smile.gif

My daughter has it. There are about 15 or so pieces in the book I think and a CD. It's all modern stuff and my daughter doesn't really like any of it! Whilst that doesn't mean much it's odd because my daughter likes playing a lot of modern pieces. I think it is because she tends to like "fast aggressive modern" I think is how she describes it and Spectrum is perhaps a bit heavy on the more atmospheric type pieces. Thats all just the opinion of an 11 year old though so you may love it.

The other thing about the book is that it covers a huge range of difficulty so at any one time only a few of the pieces will be at the right level (it seems to feature in every grade list with ABRSM from G2 upto about G7 I think). If you want to keep it for years and dip into it every so often that's fine but as a book to work though in a few months it's not so good.

Sorry I can't be more possitive

Don't be sorry, I was after honest opinions!! biggrin.gif

Yes, I'd gathered it covers a huge range - I couldn't see myself possibly getting it unless I was to get hold of my own cello, or a long-term loan. Just interested to know what it's like.

Atmospheric pieces are more my cup of tea than fast & furious wink.gif so it'll probably be at least worth a look if I get hold of a cello long term smile.gif

Thanks biggrin.gif

I have it. I bought it only because the BBC YM audition requirements include a piece written in the last five years! Some nice pieces, but, to be honest, I'm not sure how much use I'll get out of it...Good for sightreading practice though, maybe.

i have it and i like it, but i'm weird and enjoy modern music a lot! plus it's fun to sightread. i bought it for grade 6 or 7 i think... the nicola le fanu one.

I didn't much like it (and I do generally enjoy modern rep).

For me, the best early cello rep (up to grade 5) are still things like Time Pieces and the Suzuki books. Also, once you're up to about grade 3-ish, there's a series of books called 'classic and romantic pieces for cello' - nice stuff.

I bought spectrum for cello this morning - much cheaper in on the shelf than off the net - got it for £14 and I'm loving it, I like the fact that I can't play some of the stuff in it which means it will last me a while, the pieces aren't too bad. I had a look at the 'classical and romantic pieces for cello' and it didnt really inspire me much, didnt look like enough of a challenge!!

Ok; so here goes...
