I was wondering if most people had old violins, new violins, or somewhere in the middle. Please vote!!!

Erm not sure... anywhere between 1990-2002. It's a Eurostring Violin made in China and it's says Stradivarius heritage.. that's all.

Cecilia,
There are a number of Stradivari violins and other well known Italian makers instruments (Amati for one) that were made pre- 1700. There are also quite a lot of instruments from the Tyrolese school and Austria/Italy borders that date from then too.
What you have to remember though is that the majority of these instruments don't look as they were originally made. Over their three centuries of existance they have undergone a lot of changes that now makes them 'modern instruments' in the playing sense.
Even instruments dating from pre-1850 will have had a neck graft - where the neck is replaced by one that is more angled and with a longer fingerboard. These changes were made with the advent of more difficult music and an increase in use of the upper playing positions on the violin.

hey i know there ARE violins made pre-1700, otherwise I wouldn't have put that in the poll... I was just wondering who was lucky enough to own such an instrument!

I would have thought they would cost an awful lot!
