Hey guys!

I'm hoping I might be something aproaching good enough to take my G1 viola exam in June and I was wondering what sorts of thing the examiners are looking for at this stage?? I know they're not going to be looking for signs of being the next Yuri Bashmet and I'm aware that I'll not be expected to be perfect at only G1, but some helpful pointers would be interesting and encouraging.

(Yes, I know you don't have to take exams, but I don't mind them and am quite happy to have a kind of progress marker that way. smile.gif )

heya, id say they are looking for enthusiasm for your instrument some expression maybe and a basic understanding, good luck ! XLu

The official guide is here http://www.abrsm.org/resources/TMERevised05.pdf. and I think it's quite helpful.

Thanks for that resource, it was interesting! I'm rather thinking hat I won't be ready for G1 by June somehow. It's probably better to wait until November when I'm pressing on towards G2 standard and feeling much more confident (more chance of doing really well and getting the boost from that rolleyes.gif ), but I might take the prep test in June instead and will still go ahead with my theory papers. Trouble with me is that I wanna be a virtuoso within 6 weeks, but then I guess most of us do!!! laugh.gif

I would say it would be good to wait until November, because you’re bound to be more confident and get a better mark (not that you wouldn’t be able to do it in June!). You could even go straight in at grade 2; that’s what I’ve done with my piano, which I’ve been learning for just over ten months. Anyway, whatever you decide, just remember that there’s no rush and you have all the time you need. Even June is quite a long way off yet! biggrin.gif
