I have a carbon fibre bow from col legno. As a predominately Scottish traditional fiddle player I find it a little too light for my liking and tends to bounce around alot, but it is nice for classical music if thats what you play alot of. I reccomend you try them out though. See if your teacher has one to try out. And I have a freind who bought a CF bow off ebay for £20 from a sellar (so they are always there) and its almost as good as mine - you could check that out before you buy a more expensive one.

At the price range you're looking at, carbon fibre will almost certainly be better than pernambucco.

Ary make reasonable bows in their higher ranges (I have one that comes in at around the 500 mark - in euros - which is reasonable as a second bow). I too find CF a little too light as a fiddler - but I have a friend who plays predominantly Irish traditional music and swears by an incredibow, so I suppose it comes down to what suits you best.

My advice is to try out a load of bows (CF and wood), test the sound, balance, bounce point etc. Try them all in as many different bow strokes as possible and go for the one that you like the feel of best (not the sound) - if you choose sound over feel you'll always have to work hard with your bow, if you choose feel first, then the sound will usually follow naturally. That's what I've found in any case.

For your budget, in carbon fibre, check out the glasser bows that Liz sells. They're good value for money.

Good luck !

Hi everyone,

Can you please share your experiences regarding various violin bows, limiting the price range to 100-250 pounds. Carbon fibre bows are increasingly popular with fiddlers, but i'm wondering about its 'goodness' with all-classical repertoire. I'm especially looking for a bow that can allow better spiccatos. I'm thinking between a new carbon fibre bow (codabow, jonpaul, etc), a new incredibow, or a second hand pernambuco bow (ary maybe). Please advise!!!

Definitely pernambuco..i chose pernambuco over carbon fibre, because i just didnt like the carbon fibre bows. Pernambuco is a lot nicer to play with and is generally much more elegant. You can definiteyl get a good pernambuco bow for your price range. I have a nice 1920 german pernambuco bow which is incredibly light - and it was only £180
