Hey,

I have my grade 5 classical guitar in three days time and I'm sturggling with the diminished and whole tone scale shapes. My teacher thinks that I might be asked to play a the diminished or whole tone scales at grade 5 and has told me to learn them, even though they're not in the sylabus for G5. I can play the diminished 7th arpeggios, they're on the sylabus, but the diminish arpeggios I'm also struggling with...I really don't think I need to know them of G5 blink.gif

Could someone please tell me if these scales are required at grade 5 classical guitar? Also, if they aren't can the examiner ask you to play something that is not in the sylabus?

Thanks,
LG

I don't know if the scales are on the syllabus or not, but the examiner won't ask you to play something that isn't on it, so don't panic!

Seconded - if it ain't on the syllabus, they aren't allowed to ask for it!
Fibi
Thirded - they shouldn't definitely. Which exam board is it Lisa? You can probably check the syllabus on the board's website if you're not sure what scales are on it.

good point - it depends on the board - but if it ain't there in black and white, they can't just decide to ask you because they feel like it.

The exam board is abrsm, I know the syllabus as my teacher gave me the syllabus book...thanks for the help though. I'll tell my teacher tomorrow that if it's not on the syllabus I won't have too play it (which I'm really glad about, now I'm not worried about what might come up! biggrin.gif )

Once more, thanks for clearing this up for me,
LG
