I'm playing the Kayser exercise no 10. and finding the notes C to G or D to G (in other words adjacent notes played with same finger) a bit messy. If I aim for midway between the strings it impairs the resonance but if I flatten my finger across the strings the higher note seems to go a bit flat and sometimes catches the next string. Any tips for my fingers tips!

Are the notes slurred? If they're not, you could try stopping the bow for a fraction and quickly shifting your finger to the other string. If they're slurred, you would have to find a way to quickly shift; perhaps by positioning your finger on both positions and when the string change comes, roll your finger over to the other string. I've never had much success doing it because my fingers are small. Does anyone know if a fingerboard could be thinned so that the strings are closer? I love my violin. The only problem is that the fingerboard seems abit too wide. laugh.gif

Thanks Andromeda,
Yes the notes are slurred which is why the problem is arising - it's the same problem which affects double-stopping. I remember being told always to place the tip of your finger cleanly on the string but doing that on two strings at the same time is impossible. I shall persevere.
