Hi there i hope i'm asking this in the right place, and to the right people. What i want to know is what type/size double bass should i learn to play? I don't want to play in an orchestra, the kind of thing i want to play is the more jazz/funk kind of sound, almost like a electric bass really, but you can't get the same sound from that. If anyone can help me it would be most appreciated. Thanks.

It will also depend on your age/height
a 3/4 size is usually good for most people over the age of 12 and adults, in fact many adults play on a 3/4 size.
I'll stop here as I am merely a beginner in these things and there is more experienced people in this forum.

In the jazz world I believe just about everyone plays 3/4 size - I'm not sure I've even seen a full size double bass.

I think that for jazz-funk electric bass is the norm.

I played double bass in school and always played a 3/4 size and I'm quite tall, something like 5.11 these days and I had absolutely no problems. The bass teacher who gave me lessons played a full size and that was a bit uncomfortable. One of my freids plays a strange old one which is a full size, but the body is shorter, but wider and the whole thing is set down lower, I think thats it anyway...
