cool.gif Just wondering what kind of vibrato people are using and when it is best to use each one. For instance i found it a bit odd how most violinists use wrist vibrato and most violists use elbow vibrato. I'm just wondering whether its just coincidence that it is like that in my youth orchestra or not. Is it best to learn all 3 - arm/elbow, wrist and finger vibrato? cool.gif

I was first taught finger vibrato but my new viola teacher is trying to teach me arm vibrato, which currently I cannot do! ph34r.gif According to him, arm vibrato gives you a better range of tonal quality.

Me too.

I understood it is essential to be able to do all types of vibrato so you can have the necessary colour amd choice.

Everyone uses a combination of all 3, in different proportions. Mine is largely wrist, but obviously the actual physical action begins at the elbow, and the finger is what makes contact with the string so that has a pretty significant effect.

Finger Vibrato never felt nice... and arm vibrato was so much more comfortable!...

I've never been taught how to do vibrato but developed it over time. I started off doing finger vibrato, then an old lady who used to play the violin told me to aim for arm vibrato instead of wrist vibrato, so I worked on that and it sounded OK. But then I met a professional violinist who told me to do wrist vibrato instead as I'd have more control over it, and so that's what I do now....but there is still some movement in my arm.

I'm very happy with my vibrato now, I like the way it sounds and I like the fact that it's relaxed and that I can control it. I never realised that most viola players use arm vibrato instead; I'll have to experiment to see what works best with my new viola biggrin.gif

I tend to favour arm vibrato, but a lot depends on the sort of expression required and additionally, what position the hand is in - due to movement restrictions for example, arm vibrato is difficult in 7th position on the A string. Essentially a player needs to be able to perform all types of vibrato equally well, in order to make it sound consistent.

The only string instrument that i play is guitar and since my bridge is up a bit i just use that.
