Teaching oneself is always difficult. Why not try to find a teacher to give you at least a few lessons to get you off to a good start. If you have any friends who play they could help also. Money spent on some lessons now will be well spent. It is so easy to develop bad habits, and so very hard to break them once they are established.

Which type of guitar are you learning?

Trying to learn acoustic

Ok, that's a start. Now, do you mean classical spanish-style-fingerpicking acoustic, or more modern chord-strumming acoustic?

No problem, everyone starts somewhere. smile.gif

I would have to recommend getting hold of the Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT) Grade 1 handbook. It introduces basic chords, scales, techniques, and theory. I think a CD/cassette is available too.

Taking exams might not appeal to you, but working through grade exam material is a very structured way to learn, and there is no need to take the exam if you don't want to.

Have a look at RGT and Books For Guitar.

I just picked up books and started learning. It is difficult but you will get there in the end.

Not to diminish your achievment.
I don't think learning through books would be the whole answer. It is possible to get yourself some real bad habits that can take years to fix if you don't seek some sort of guidance early on. At some point you will need to advance further and your technique may hold you back without getting a firm grounding.
