I have been asked to perform "Theme from Schindler's list" in a concert and need tips on how to keep my bowing completely legato. And any other techniques would be most appreciated. Also, how do i stop nerves from getting to me on the day?

Two words for nerves. Eat-banana lol

Schindler's list is a beautiful piece. Make sure you use lots of vibrato and for the Ds in the opening bars on the minums (i think they are minums) you can [suggestion] use open D to make a more haunting sound...that is if you are playign it on violin lol. Just some pointers i had in my lesson.

I'm playing that piece too and love it - but my teacher has forbidden me using open strings for the D's as she wants me using lots of vibrato!

I wasnt going to use open D but she insisted I use it lol. I suppose it's all down to personal taste. I suggest you see the film to get the feel of the film it really is so tragic.

You could vibrato with your finger on the D an octave higher on the A string while playing the open D (this works very well for the open G string but should still provide some "sympathetic" vibrato effect)

While it does need oodles of vib, especially on the minims (it is marked espr.), in the opening bar the D quavers can be played quite poignantly on open strings. After all you have to play the G in bars 7 and 14 on an open string smile.gif so the tone will match.

Listen here, open strings on the quavers are good enough for VFV biggrin.gif

well, I've heard a violin-only orchestra play it. I think this is it.

The soloist was ok at first, but the last part was quite out of tune. dry.gif

Even so its interesting to see the fingerings and use of Sul D, Sul G passages.

The film was based on 'Schindler's Ark'.

If you think the film was tragic, just read the original book! There were many scenes too overwhelming to be shown on film!

I do get your point but I have to do what my teacher says and I personally hate open strings anyway (although it is much easier to play it using open D's, which is what I did when I first looked at the piece)!

I love open strings in the right places, especially the the G and D (I agree the E in most cases is to be avoided)

I am sure the open D needs to be used for the quavers...but definitely NOT the minims. Still I see that you have to follow your teacher's advice.

Well thanks for all the tips. Very much appreciated, and how does banana help nerves by the way? You can get the music from any dealer. Or try www.musicroom.com - they will definitely have it.
