Please could someone give me the titles of pieces that are considered to be the standard repertoire for viola? I'm really ignorant, I only really know of the Walton Concerto sad.gif I'd love to listen to more viola music.....the violists who played at the Woodford concert sounded really lovely.

Thanks! smile.gif

Well Brahms did arrange, or should I say upgrade, them for viola himself. They do seem to me to suit the clarinet better though.

I should have mentioned earlier that there are loads of other viola works that are not really standard repertoire because they aren't heard very often, but that are quite beautiful, and worth listening to if you like viola music.

For chamber music enthusiasts the two Mozart string quintets have an extra viola added to the traditional quartet line-up, and really nice parts as it is suspected that Mozart wrote the extra viola part to play himself.

Flos Campi for viola, small chorus and small orchestra is gorgeous and not played enough (Vaughan-Williams).

John Woolrich's Ulysses Awakes is seriously moving stuff and based on a song

If we haven't given you enought o be going with on with take a look here

You could add Walton's concerto, the Bach (cello) suites and maybe the Eccles sonata

And what about the rest of Vieuxtemps' viola works? The long list post only gve his elegie, but that's the one I like least! The 'Unfinished Sonata' is my personal fave and the 3 movement Sonata is nice too. And the cappricio for solo viola that was the last in his suite, (the others being for violin), mmmmmmmm tongue.gif Can't wait to be able to play it!

What about the Bruch Clarinet and viola pieces for those who are worried about offending clarinetists!!! We could just team up with them instead and play that superb concerto. laugh.gif

Hey! Great news! My hubby secured some work today, so music lessons can go ahead very soon. YIPPEE! biggrin.gif
