Strings are not overly expensive. You can get them in sets or as individuals. There are more expensive strings. You are looking at paying about £10+ for a set smile.gif

I am not too sure though as I am not a Violinist (sister was though)

I don't know how much violin strings are, but a good cello A-string (which is longer and thicker and therefore much more expensive) is about £15-20. You just need to buy an E-string. Is there a friendly violinist/violin teacher you can ask for help?

You can get a decent E string for only a few quid, so don't panic biggrin.gif

I use www.stringmail.co.uk, I think there are other good mail order string places out there too.

I use a Hill special E string, which is an above average string, and that only costs less than £3, the most expensive one I managed to find was £6-something, so it's not going to break the bank - you managed to break the cheapest string wink.gif well done.

If you're unsure how to replace it when you get it, see if you can find someone to show you how, it isn't hard once you know how but could seem very tricky if you've not done it before. All else failing, I'm sure someone on here could give you a step-by-step guide!

If you struggle to put the string on just have a look how the other strings are on. That's how I learnt to add strings, took about 5 mins. And I don't even play violin smile.gif

If you have a good music shop near they will stock violin strings, and may well be able to fit it for you also.

Yes, this is what I would also suggest.

Poppys,
Sorry, but I don't agree with anyone teaching themselves to play the violin and there are others on this forum who will agree with me. Lessons should at least be sought for the initial stages even if you go it alone at a later date.

Advice is to seek a teacher and learn some basics, their experience and guidance will be invaluable. Bad habits formed now will debilitate your progress and may even prove impossible to erradicate later on.

I too was going to attempt to teach myself violin, even with my sister help who used to play violin. And found it difficult. I agree that initial lessons should be sought just so you learn the basic and don't get into irreversible bad habits smile.gif
