Hi everyone. It might seem a daft question but I'm looking to buy a double bass for myself (adult) to start with. The only place I can find via the internet is Contrabass which sells prof. quality instruments at big prices eg 7K. I have heard of Stentor basses but there seems to be very little in the way of info on the webby world. I wouldn't mind hiring one for a year or so to so if I really like it but still can't find anything. It's amazing how many music shops don't sell double basses. Does anyone have any ideas on any shops (in London or the South East) or websites that sell them. Any info appreciated.

Try Brittens Music. Don't have their web address to hand I'm afraid, but I know you can hire double basses from them. Apart from the website, they have several shops. The nearest branch to you would probably be West byfleet, in Surrey.

Alternatively there's Signet Music in Bradwell Abbey near Milton Keynes. They also offer double bass hire.

Contrabass Shop is very, very good and they do sell cheaper basses, from about £3000 I think (you need to phone to check on their complete stock as I know they are in the process of moving from London out to Guildford), but in general they tend to cater for the more advanced student and above.

I don't know what you are looking for, but if you are to be an adult beginner it will be worth asking your teacherabout this. Often teachers will know of instruments that are for sale because the players are trading up to something better.

Thank you both for the info very useful. I'm glad there is somewhere that I could a bass if I want to. Best wishes and thanks again.

There is a shop in Sutton, Surrey (M&J Healey Violins - Tel 020 8644 4700) which might be able to help. Mrs Healey is a double bass player/teacher and I think the shop has a variety of double basses (despite its name). They are very friendly and helpful.

Hope you find an instrument.

It's common practice for beginners to rent a 'cello package, (speaking from a 'cellist perspective smile.gif . SO, I'd be really surprised if you couldn't do the same thing with a double bass. Try those shops that deal a lot with schoolchildren. Malcolm Tysoe is one in Farnborough, Kent. Very close to Bromley, so not a bad drive out from South East London. If you Google 'Tysoe' you should get the phone number just to check first. Or maybe try Dulwich Music Shop ? (www.dulwichmusic.com) They're supposed to have a lot of instruments in stock.
