If you're just trying it out, I'd suggest maybe hiring from a good shop, for a while to see how you take to it. They are expensive, and quite a big investment.

For a reasonable instrument you'd probably looking at 1000 - 3000 pounds.

It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. You can get a basic student cello for less than £200 if you shop around online. But the suggestion of renting may be well worth considering.

I was wondering what the average cello was??? biggrin.gif There are so many levels. Anyway, yeah, rent first to see if you take to it. Some shops give you a discount of the rental fee if you decided to buy the instrument and a basic student type will cost about £400 from a shop, (Stentor 2), and you can also get them for £200-300 on-line as Liz says.

Have fun!

Thank you Meerkat , Liz and Elizabeth . smile.gif
I think Renting is the thing I'll probably do...

Thanks again for your help.

How are you getting on with reading the dictionary? Don't you find it tough going? tongue.gif

When are you planning to start your cello playing? I'm just waiting for Sir to get a new income source, then I'm all ready for viola lessons. I've got some music, some theory books and even one of those chromatic tuner/metronome things now. Just need the £$£$£$
