I'm looking for a new violin and have this morning tried out the Paesold 802 which was recommended by my violin teacher and which I like. The shop has the outfit on sale for £570 which was slightly more than I intended paying. But I have seen the same violin outfit for sale on a couple of Internet violin shops for just under £400. That is almost 50% difference!

Does anyone know what I should be expecting to pay? Also is it a bad idea to buy a violin that I've not had a go on (ie from an Internet site). How different is each one even though it's the same model? Hope someone can help.

This sort of variation in price is nothing unusual at all. In the case of Pasold it will be aggravated at the moment because the makers of Paesold recently went into administration and all their stringed instruments were sold off by tender. It is possible that there may still be some Paesolds around that were bought by tender which would mean they were bought for a small fraction of the usual wholesale price. For example we had one (sold a few weeks ago) that we sold for £250 (violin only) - and no we don't have any more. At that time the list price - with a decent bow and case - was £465. Under £400 is entirely plausible for a shop with low overheads even at normal sales periods and if a shop has any of these tender ones left the price could well be even lower.
Many shops sell above the list price because they have done work to the instrument. I have to say that judging by the Paesolds we had, I would have thought there was little if anything to do to them. I don't think they are necessarily the best buy in the price range you are looking at but I couldn't fault the ones we had on set-up.
Is it a bad idea to buy one you haven't tried? Not at all, subject to the reputation of the make and / or dealer. You have in law 7 working days in which to return it if it is not what you want. To minimise problems though, do ask them to send it bridge up.
Finally - if you have definitely decided to get one of these, go for it quickly, because they won't be around much longer - they are not being made any more.

Hi Gilliwigs
just seen this post, but if you are still looking for a Paesold let me know as I know where you can get one considerably cheaper than the prices you quote....
