I'm supposed to be practising certain scales I've been given legatissimo...I forgot what it was last week and I've forgotten again so don't want to ask because I feel stupid!
Is it just extreme legato...where you erm play one note then are still holding it down while you play the next ?

I KNOW THE LITERAL MEANING - HOW DO I PLAY IT

That's right - there's a passage in one of Chopin's Mazurkas (G minor) marked "legitissimo".
At first I thought 'dead easy' all you have to do is hold the pedal down, but it's actually very difficult 'cos there are loads of potential discords so you can hardly use the pedal - it really is all down to the fingers!

I am not using the pedal for them

Yes it's a more extreme version of legato - where the notes really do overlap slightly. Legato of course one note goes down as the previous goes up without any break in the sound but legatissimo gives a slight overlap to the notes (I've just repeated myself - sorry!)

It just means very smooth, like to turn "loud" into "very loud" you add "issimo".
